Maple Story

MapleStory Introduces Dragon Master Evan

Nexon America’s leading free-to-play game, MapleStory, has introduced a brand new class and character in the most recent update, Dragon Master Evan. While do not have much in terms of statistics, this is how the story goes. Evan is an ordinary farm boy living in a small town called Henesys. He wakes one morning from an ominous dream and later stumbles upon a dragon egg, forever changing his life. Evan, chosen in his dream to become someone great, has suddenly become a Dragon Master. This new hero must live up to the expectations his new role entails and tame a powerful dragon as he races against the clock. The Black Mage is back and is more determined than ever to destroy Maple World, so it’s up to Dragon Master Evan to be the hero.

Alganon

Alganon Loses Players, Team, Professionalism

Last year there were high hopes from the management team that was putting together the great indie dream that is the MMO Alganon, until December that is.  Following a rushed launch that resulted in some very critical reviews, Alganon simply never took off and now that same team has been brought down to reality and has been humbled by not only the state of the game, but also in the state of their jobs.

Unfortunately, humility does not look like a primary trait of the game’s new leader, Derek Smart.  In a recent post on the official Alganon forums, the new boss certainly flexed his muscle and by all accounts (or at least his) he’s kind of a big deal.

In an age of politically correct public relations, Derek Smart's surprising statements are groundbreaking while possibly game breaking.  I will say that the community of players are behind him, and they feel his frustration.  But I will also say that his unprofessional approach and lacerating opinion of players that don’t care for the game is not going to win them too many accolades from the gaming community as a whole.

Boss

Alganon is a WOW clone.  This is officially admitted by Derek Smart, not really the most intelligent thing he could be publishing while he is trying to save the investors.  Big deal, lots of games try to take from World of Warcraft, but now the players that saw its differences and enjoy playing it have no defense against the critics because it is now officially revealed as an unoriginal imitation.

Alganon didn’t have troubles because of its resemblance to WOW (think Allods), it was due primarily on the choice of a subscription model combined with bugs.  I agree that changes to the development staff are justified, but it certainly is not being dealt with correctly.

I had to wonder what his real intentions were when he posted this PR nightmare.  Alganon was David Allen’s baby and he did a remarkable job bringing a low budget game out of the trenches of independence when everyone said it couldn't be done. While David Allen has certainly come off as an unlikeable guy himself, he deserves more than a public thrashing by his old employer, an employer that seems just as inexperienced and stubborn as the ones he is criticizing.

Runes of Magic

Frogster To Build "Runes of Magic – The Challenge" for Facebook

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) currently in full swing at San Francisco, the MMO publisher and operator Frogster revealed that it has a new product in development. With “Runes of Magic – The Challenge”, a social game developed for casual players on Facebook, the company will for the first time enter the rapidly growing market of casual games in social networks.  With the emergence of new technologies, and of course lots of revenue potential, MMO developers and publishers are making their way into the social web app platform.

“Runes of Magic – The Challenge” will be set in the rich fantasy universe of Frogster’s popular free-to-play MMO game Runes of Magic. With adventure, exploration and strategy elements all combined in a fun, easy to play Facebook application, “Runes of Magic – The Challenge” takes full advantage of networked gaming and viral communications in the sphere of the largest social network worldwide and thus, expands the audience of Runes of Magic through additional gameplay possibilities. Players will be able to gain special cards with key codes in “Runes of Magic – The Challenge”, which they can use to unlock extra rewards in the full client version of Runes of Magic.

“Runes of Magic is the first free-to-play MMO game ever [officially announced] to expand into the social networks sphere with a rich, full, social gaming experience that will appeal to fantasy fans of all ages – independently of whether they play the full client game or not”, comments Lars Koschin, CEO of Frogster America, Inc. “With the success of Runes of Magic among core MMO players, it was a natural decision to build upon the franchise by taking it to a genre with mass market appeal and the powerful viral approach of the rapidly evolving social networks. The result is ’Runes of Magic – The Challenge’ for Facebook.”

“Runes of Magic – The Challenge” is being produced by Frogster America and developed by Mothership Interactive, Inc. Frogster’s first social game is scheduled to be launched in the second quarter of 2010 in Europe and America .

Furthermore, Frogster will shortly implement a “Facebook Connect” application for players of Runes of Magic which allows them to find co-players of the virtual world on Facebook and to see own Facebook contacts, who are not yet players, on the official website of Runes of Magic www.runesofmagic.com and invite them into the full version.
