NCsoft Takes Care of Business
This weekend, Aion opened up servers for pre-order players with surprisingly few technical issues. Aside from the server pre-selection glitches, this may have been one of the smoothest major release server openings yet. In the hours prior to launch nearly 50,000 Facebook users were impatiently chattering for NCsoft to open the gates, or as they put it "Push the damn button". Everyone expected the hundreds of thousands of pre-order log ins to immediately crash the server but NCsoft had planned well.
The server pre-selection process that allowed players who pre-ordered to login early to pick a server and create a character two days prior to actually being able to play the game helped NCsoft properly balance and prepare servers while also taking some of the load off "play day". Then they properly queued players into the server after log-in to prevent the starting areas from being overloaded with level 1 toons. I do agree though, waiting over an hour in queue sucks but it makes for much better in game play once you are in.
Because of the server balancing, zone channel system, and just damn good preparation the game played on our server with almost zero lag and not one server crash, that's right not one. Kudos to NCsoft for making this a picture perfect pre-launch, we will have to see how the official launch date goes but since 400,000 players pre-ordered, I think it is safe to say the worst is behind them.
I am guessing that they may double their pre-order figures within 15 days as many players held back to buy the box copy from retail stores, which would bring them to nearly 1 million copies sold. Impressive since only about 3 million of World of Warcraft's 12 million subscribers are from North American players. For its launch, NCsoft has also added a 10.00 upgrade pack for those still wanting to get the collector's edition items, and they have also launched a new version of the official site to showcase its powerwiki. You can buy the game and register to play at the official site http://aiononline.com.
